During his electronics study at the university of applied sciences in the early 80s, Ger Cloudt learned to program using punch cards. He still considers this a valuable experience, even in the modern world of software development. After graduating, he started his career as a digital electronics engineer, designing digital circuitry and programming in assembler. A few years later, he switched to software development at Philips. In the late 90s, he became a software group lead at Philips Medical Systems. He continued his career in several technical software management positions at Philips, NXP and Bosch, in which he had to bridge the gap between ‘the software engineer’ and ‘higher management.’
It was when Ger was working at Bosch when he decided to write a book about software quality to capture his view on software quality and its importance because he has the opinion that many people have a too narrow view on software quality. Software quality is not only about process and process adherence nor is it only testing; it is so much more. When seeking a new challenge early 2023, he accepted a position as software quality manager at ASML to walk the talk.
After publishing his book early 2021, as a side activity next to his regular job, Ger started as quality management lecturer and coach for the EngD Software Technology and EngD Automotive and Mechatronics Design programs at Eindhoven University of Technology. Additionally, he is regularly invited to talk about software quality.
